Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Home Foundation
The Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Home Foundation was formed in the late 1980’s. Then State Representative Tommy Carter called Dr. Milly Caudle, professor of history and a long-time preservationist, to say that he had learned that John LeGrand, great grandson of General Wheeler, was willing to arrange a gift of the Wheeler structures and 50 acres to the State of Alabama. The foundation was legally formed and the transfer took place in 1993.
For several years afterwards the Foundation was dormant. In 2002, however, Lucy LeGrand Walser, great-great granddaughter of General Wheeler became active in the Foundation. She led a huge community outreach which included members of the foundation board and many interested citizens.
Two hundred thousand dollars were raised. This effort effectively saved the site. Meanwhile, the Foundation was re-organized to more effectively raise funds and involve the public. Examples of money raised and contributed were $75,000 for furniture restoration and $250,000 to help finish restoration of the main house. Some funds came from grants, others came from individuals.
The Friends Board of Directors continues to meet regularly and to support the ongoing efforts to maintain the Wheeler Home. New members of the Friends of General Joe Wheeler Home Foundation are welcome and appreciated.
Thanks to you, the support can continue!
The Friends of the General Joe Wheeler Home Foundation continues to play a key role in the restoration of the site. Your contribution is a tax deductible contribution. Thank you for your generosity.
